Join Larry Ladd as he describes the needs that have motivated organizations to create a Chief Risk Officer position including describing the role in other industries where the position is more common, provide a typical position description, describe how a Chief Risk Officer position might function, describe alternative structures that can perform a similar role without a formal CRO position, and then outline the qualifications and skill sets needed to perform the role. We will also describe how the internal audit function can relate to the Chief Risk Officer role.

Learning objectives

At the conclusion of this program, participants will be able to

  • Identify ways organizations, including many outside of higher education, are responding to a changing understanding of risk and how it can be managed.
  • Explain risk management more broadly than the traditional risk management or internal audit roles.
  • Evaluate whether a Chief Risk Officer position is desirable for their institution.
